Description
Nutrition in pregnancy, during lactation, childhood, and later stages has a huge influence on overall development. There is a growth spurt in the human brain during the last trimester of pregnancy and the first month after the birth, with a large increase in the content of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) in brain. The fetus and the newborn infant depend on maternal supply of DHA. Since the synthesis of DHA in the foetus and placenta is low, an adequate maternal DHA status is very important. Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids also called as DHA plays an important role in brain development and function. Trials have shown that a maternal intake during pregnancy is favorable for the visual and cognitive development (cognition is a group of mental processes that includes attention, memory, understanding language, learning, reasoning, problem solving) of the fetus and the newborn infant.
