Lipid Lowering Agent

Atorin 5
Description
Atorvastatin is a unique hypolipidemic drug. Atorvastatin can: Decrease both LDL and triglycerides together without adverse effects, increases HDL levels as well. Atorvastatin decreases formation of cholesterol by inhibiting 3-Hydroxy-3-Methyl Glutaryl Coenzyme A reductase (3 HMG CoA reductase). Inhibition of synthesis of cholesterol leads to increased formation of LDL receptors. Thus LDL is cleared from the blood. VLDL can also bind to LDL receptor and thus gets cleared from blood. Atorvastatin reduces the LDL level by 35-61%, Triglycerides - 10-45%, Total cholesterol - 17-46% and Increases HDL level by 3-12%.
Indications
Mixed dyslipidemia
Hypercholesterolemia
Composition
Each tablet contains:

Atorvastatin
5 mg

Dosage
10 - 80 mg/day can be safely given.
Most patients reach target lipid levels with 10-20 mg OD.
Side Effects
On the contrary, despite being a powerful drug atorvastatin has excellent safety and adverse event profile.
Contraindications
Atorvastatin is contraindicated in patients who are hypersensitive to atorvastatin or having liver disease.
Presentation
Atorin is available as a strip of 10 tablets.

Atorin F
Description
Atorin-F is the novel fixed dose combination of atorvastatin an HMG-COA inhibitor and Fenofibrate. Fenofibric acid, the active metabolite of fenofibrate produces reduction in total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, apolipoprotein B, total triglycerides and triglyceride rich lipoprotein (VLDL) in treated patients. In addition, treatment with fenofibrate results in increase in high-density lipoprotein (HDL) and apoproteins.
Indications
  • Diabetic dyslipidemia.
  • Dyslipidemic patients not able to tolerate high dose of statins.
  • Primary hypercholesterolaemia.
Composition
Each tablet contains:

Micronised Fenofibrate
160 mg

Atorvastatin
10 mg

Dosage
One tablet once daily.
Side Effects
Drug is generally well tolerated. Rarely does it show elevation of transaminase level, abdominal pain, myalgia, diarrhea and fatigue.
It is recommended that patient on therapy should check serum transaminases every three months.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to Fenofibrate/ Atorvastatin
Liver disease
Pregnant and nursing women
